Whose Land – Indigenous People or Settlers?

Taught by Luke Gascho

Class begins 3/4/2019, ends 3/13/2019

10:00-11:30
The history of land in North America is most
commonly viewed only through the eyes of people who
settled the continent. The sessions in this series will show
how the explorers’ and settlers’ approaches to the ‘new
land’ was informed by the Doctrine of Discovery – a
framework that gave governments moral and legal rights
to invade Indigenous lands and dominate Indigenous
Peoples. Topics will also include what the continent
was like before 1492, learnings from traditional
ecological knowledge, insights into the intersections of
the Indigenous Peoples and settlers in Elkhart County,
and actions that can lead to right relationships between
people and land.
