Know the Show Before You Go
This spring, the Theater Department at Goshen College will present “Rent,” a musical loosely based on Giacomo Puccini’s opera “La Bohème.” “Rent” won the 1996 Tony Award for Best Musical and the 1996 Pulitzer Prize for Drama.
The story takes place in the late 1980s and early 1990s, when friends in Manhattan’s East Village struggle to build the lives of their dreams. Pennilessness, substance abuse, HIV/Aids, social tension, and political unrest, among other hardships, challenge the group physically and emotionally. Facing the problems head-on, they make personal self-discoveries and find what really matters most in life.
Together, we will examine themes through the music and dialogue, understand their correlations to the opera “La Bohème,”and learn about the show to better enjoy the production. The class will have the opportunity to visit Umble Center to talk with the production staff and enjoy a free brush-up rehearsal.
Marcia Yost will teach this class.
