Jesus, Empire, and Race: In the World of Christian Education

Taught by Richard Hughes

Class Dates - Greencroft Jennings Auditorium - 10:00 - 11:30 AM Monday 9/14 Wednesday 9/16 Monday 9/21 Wednesday 9/23

Over the course of a 52-year career in Christian higher education, Richard Hughes often wondered whether the allegiance of many Christian schools was to Jesus or to empire, whiteness, and a conservative brand of American politics. That question prompted him to write a book, scheduled to be released by Orbis in the spring of 2027 and bearing the title, Whitewashing the Christian College: A Call to Courageous and Gospel-Rooted Leadership in Christian Higher Education. Based on that book, Hughes will deliver four lectures on the following themes.

  • Lecture I: The Politics of Jesus and the Politics of Empire (1)
  • Lecture II: The Politics of Jesus and the Politics of Empire (2)
  • Lecture III: On Teaching While Woke: Race in Christian Higher Education
  • Lecture IV: On Story, Protest, and Dissent
